The New Paradigm

Brain-based education and  teaching is an approach that requires the teacher to create and implement strategies for teaching based on principles derived from neuroscience (an understanding of the brain and how it works, in lay-man terms).

Confession: Totally different approach for me.

Reflect.
Relax.

After spending the past 20 years with a behavioral -based approach to teaching, this is something new. Further into the science world than I may be comfortable.

Some of the concepts learned are not new to me. For example,  I understand that adolescents have an underdeveloped brain. As a behavioral therapist for troubled teens, I would consistently tell parents to remember this fact and use it to help them keep perspective.

The fact that the brain is made for survival aligns with my belief system. When a person is living in survival mode, there are a lot of irrational things that they do to keep themselves OK.  But knowing that the environment and activities that I produce in class can actually shape a student's brain is pretty serious stuff...

I look forward to learning strategies that will work based on the evidence of the functioning of the brain. I can hardly wait to see what experiences I may be able to concoct that might help a student in experiencing something new that will be long-lasting and impactful.
